Makeover with a mission

Hyde Park couple plan kitchen remodel while thinking green, red, white and blue

Sadie sits near the pullout drawer, which holds her food and treats. A sliding cover allows the drawer to double as a handy bench, perfect for putting on shoes when heading out the nearby back door.

This homeowner collects and documents artwork created by her uncle, Tran Mawicke, the illustrator responsible for this Royal Crown Cola poster to the left of the rear door. The homeowner's sister, Kathy Bogan, created the watercolor wall art that hangs to the right.

A tulip design on three Motawi tiles were the inspiration for several of the design elements in this kitchen.

A cabinet to the right of the refrigerator can open to serve as a coffee station or close to conceal the works.

Home goods are scattered across the windowsill of this kitchen, all the better to catch the natural light and show off.

A new opening between the center hallway and the kitchen design allows for a much-improved traffic flow in the home.

None of this room’s original windows were moved. The homeowner repaired and reinsulated this window which is actually pine, and Landmark Finishes did the faux finish to resemble white oak.
