  • Housetrends
Barstools add seats without cluttering a kitchen
Adjustable barstools curve around this counter, without adding extra, unappealing bulk.

Remember Norm, the television character from Cheers?  If so, you know he had his favorite bar stool where he perched regularly. Just like Norm, we all want to be comfortable at the bar or counter, so here are some things to things to consider when buying the perfect barstools, and some of our favorite picks.

Barstool adjusts to accommodate the setting

The Tyler stool is clean, contemporary and comfortable.  The walnut veneer back is available in natural or java finish and embraces an upholstered inset cushion.  The hydraulic lift column adjusts from counter to bar height and the frame is offered in various powder coated finishes as well.  Visit elitemodern.com for more information.

Versatile barstool for indoor or outdoor use

“One More” references the fact that sometimes one drink isn’t enough according to this stool’s designer, Philippe Starck.  Manufactured in a variety of colors, including transparent, this elegant but simple stool of polycarbonate is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and comes in bar and counter heights.  Visit starck.com for more information.

Furniture pays tribute to time past

Things to consider:

Height – Is your island or peninsula counter-height or bar height?  Counter stools are generally 24-26” high to fit a 36” high counter, versus bar stools which are 28-30” for a typical 42” high bar.  Be aware that stools are not always made in both heights.

With or without a back – depending on the available walking space behind your stools you may opt for backless stools that tuck neatly under the island overhang.

How many stools do you need?

Depending on the stool style, allow the following space:

  • Stools  approx. 16"-18" wide: allow for 21"-22" of space
  • Stools approx. 19"-22" wide: allow for 24"-25" of space
  • Swivel Stools or Stools with Arms: allow for additional space
