Finished lower level offers inviting retreat

Sliding barn doors add privacy to a home theater
Shiplap, a rough-sawn pine paneling, was used to build the custom sliding barn doors that create visual interest and block off the home theatre during movie night.

Roughly 1,400 square feet of unfinished space allowed Eddie and Tammy Mercado to use their imaginations when it came time to finish the basement in their Centerville home. Their requirements included a private bedroom and bathroom for their teenage daughter and a home theatre the whole family could enjoy—anything else would be icing on the cake.

Cheery walls brighten up a basement bedroom

The cheerful teal walls, accented by black and white bedding and window treatments, create the ultimate private retreat for the family’s 14-year-old daughter. “Now she has her own space to hang out with her friends,” says Tammy.

Just down the hall is the family’s entertaining area. Working with MML Remodeling, the highlight of the Mercado’s home theatre is a light gray shiplap accent wall, which serves as the perfect backdrop for the television. Rather than standard doors, the homeowners had custom-made shiplap barn doors installed to block off the theatre room from the rest of the space.

The kitchenette area is adorned with maple cabinetry featuring a charcoal pewter wash and quartz countertops. Rather than a typical island, Tammy selected a wood table with wheels from Restoration Hardware. “This allows us to move it if the kids have friends over or use it as a buffet table if we’re entertaining large groups,” she says.
