Our desire to entertain outdoors has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years. As a result, the selection of fire pits is more stylish and sleeker than ever. Here’s some factors to consider before purchasing your own fire feature.
A quality fire pit is an investment for your property that lasts a lifetime with proper care. A good gas or wood-burning model can range between $1,000 and $5,000 while a portable solo stove may cost a few hundred dollars.
Stainless steel, stone, and concrete are the most common materials. The design and material you choose should not only suit your personal taste but also how frequently you intend to use your fire pit.
STYLE OPTIONS
Fire pit tables are elevated higher from the ground than traditional fire pits. They are typically made from steel or stone and often come with a surface to hold drinks. Some can act as a dining table as well, with a fire pit in the center.
Fire bowls are usually made of steel and are suspended over a concrete patio floor by a frame and sit low to the ground. A fire pit bowl is great for creating an industrial feel in a modern outdoor space.
Fire pit kits come with everything you need, including stones, adhesives and a fire ring to safely contain the flame. Some kits are rounded, but you can find square kits as well. Kits are permanently placed and not moveable.
FUEL TYPE
Propane and natural gas fire pits are smoke-free and easier to clean than a wood fire pit. A wood pit or solo stove will burn hotter but will also produce more smoke, soot, and ash.
Gas-powered fire pits are easy to use, and they turn on and off instantly. City dwellers and those living in suburban areas tend to choose gas fire pits as opposed to wood, since wood fuel might be harder to find in urban neighborhoods. Gas fire pits provide the perfect centerpiece for a chat set. Simply surround your gas fire pit with a set of comfortable chairs for an intimate conversation. Note that while roasting marshmallows is possible, gas fire pits are not ideal for grilling or open-fire cooking.
While propane tanks are portable, they need refilling. A standard 20-pound propane tank lasts between 8 to 12 hours, depending on the flame setting and usage. If you opt for a natural gas model, professional installation may be required, adding to the cost. Gas fire pits need proper ventilation to prevent gas buildup. Always use them in an open or well-ventilated area.
OTHER FEATURES
Most gas fire pit tables have adjustable flame controls, allowing you to increase or decrease the heat output based on the weather or your comfort level. You might also want to consider accessories like a fire poker, fire pit cover, glass wind guard, or remote control.
PLACEMENT
Technically, a fire pit can sit on grass. However, it is not recommended without proper precautions because the heat from the fire pit can damage the grass or even cause a fire. Using a heat-resistant barrier or choosing a space on your patio or gravel area for your fire pit is a safer option. If placing on a wooden deck, use a fireproof mat underneath and follow manufacturer guidelines to ensure safety.
