Kitchen remodel sings the blues

A custom designed Keurig caddy is tucked behind the glass doors on the blue hutch, which serves as a coffee bar.

Wanting to update an outdated kitchen without completely trashing the current cabinetry configuration, a Powell couple was looking for creative and cost-effective solutions that would make the space more interesting and workable for entertaining.

They extended the challenge to the team at Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers who was working on other projects in the couple’s recently acquired home. Designers Courtney Burnett and Romano Klepec agreed that the existing cabinetry still worked in the space and there was no need to start from scratch.

To enhance the configuration, the team extended the kitchen by adding a nautical gray-blue built-in hutch and replaced the existing island with a more expansive one. A few cabinets from the island were repurposed for the new buffet area. The remaining surplus cabinets were used elsewhere in the home.

Barn wood beams traversing the ceiling visually connect the kitchen with the dining area. “The peaked ceiling in that area was interesting but lackluster. It was basically a drywall box,” Burnett says. “We wanted to add drama, texture, and warmth.”
