As we launch into spring, we can’t help thinking about getting back outside…planting in the garden, cooking on the grill, or entertaining friends on the patio. As you look forward to those warmer days, here are some ideas to add function and flair to your back yard.
With relaxation in mind…
• Find the perfect spot for a swing or hammock that is perfect for lounging with a book or music.
• Create a cozy fire pit area with seating in a circular layout to promote conversation.
• Get double duty with an outdoor sofa that’s great for company but also an afternoon nap.
• Add ambience with a water feature. A small fountain or pond provides a calming vibe.
• A hot tub provides the perfect place to unwind no matter the outdoor temperature.

When it’s time to entertain…
• Serve meals al fresco in a dining area equipped with a generously sized table and comfy chairs.
• An efficient outdoor kitchen might include a grill, fridge and sink—and perhaps a pizza oven.
• Add convenience with a bar station for mixing drinks and storing glasses and supplies.
• Set the stage with an outdoor, weather-resistant TV that makes game days and movie nights a fresh-air family affair.

If you want to keep active…
• It’s impossible to beat the draw of a swimming pool especially if it’s heated from April to November.
• Keep the kids happy with a treehouse or playset that has swings, slides, monkey bars and more.
• Group games such as cornhole, bocce, or horseshoes are fun draws for all ages.
• Cater to your own desires with a putting green, basketball hoop, or quiet space for yoga.

Make it extra inviting…
• Create a cozy glow at night with string lights or lanterns which can be solar if needed.
• Garden art in the form of a sculpture or mural will set the space apart.
• Add plenty of color with flowers, both in beds and a variety of overflowing containers.

Backyard structures
They can range from a privacy wall to a decked-out pavilion, but a backyard structure—from simple to complex—is a wonderful way to create a gathering spot, focal point or provide shelter. The right structures can
transform your space into an enchanting retreat and even increase property value. Outdoor lighting adds drama by highlighting trees, architectural features, landscaping and paths. Task lights along stairs provide an inviting
glow along with an element of safety.

A patio cover protects a patio or deck area from the elements. It can be connected to or separated from the house.
A pergola is typically made up of columns that hold a beam as well as a rafter roofing system. The rafters can be left exposed or covered for weather protection. A motorized pergola provides on-demand, adjustable shade, sun, and shelter from rain through operable, remote-controlled louvers.

A pavilion is a covered outdoor living space offering protection from sun and rain, allowing for yearround, weather-resistant outdoor dining, lounging, and entertaining.
A pool house can be used to store pool equipment on a basic level, or may house a bathroom, outdoor kitchen, guest room or entertainment space on a grander scale.
